What does IPL treat?

Over time our skin begins to show damage that we describe as hyperpigmentation (brown spots), red blood vessels, spider veins, rosacea and age spots.  Areas of discoloration can make us look less attractive and even older.  Fortunately we do have a solution for this problem, and it is called IPL – Intense Pulsed Light.

What is IPL?

Laser skin treatments have been an excellent option for years.  What has changed are improvements in the technology, making IPL treatments safer and less uncomfortable while still delivering the best possible results.  Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL treatment, is an innovative technology that helps remove age spots, discoloration, and uneven skin pigment, working to rejuvenate the look and feel of our skin.  We are also able to effectively treat inflammatory acne – nodules that are red, tender and prone to causing scarring.

Modern day IPL selects the portion of the spectrum of light that will target the specific discoloration that you wish to treat. Our IPL represents the latest generation in this technology, incorporating what we have learned over the past 20 years.  The portion of light that is dangerous and can cause skin cancer is excluded during all treatments.   We have separate handpieces targeted to treat different problems, with built in filters that eliminates the risk of user / operator error.

What areas of the body can be treated?

We can treat the face, neck, upper chest, arms, legs, back and abdomen – virtually all parts of the body!

Who is not a candidate for IPL?

During your consultation we complete a Fitzpatrick questionnaire, generating a number that classifies your skin as Type I, II, III, IV or V.  Lighter fair skinned people at typically I or II.  Darker skin is classified as III, IV or V.  People with asian, hispanic or black skin are not good candidates for IPL as the light treatment could alter their natural skin tone / pigment and could make their skin condition worse.  If you have been actively tanning (natural light or tanning beds) then you must wait for your tan to fade, limit sun exposure, wear hats and use SPF 50 before being considered for IPL.  There are also certain medications that cause sensitivity to light – we call them photosensitizers, and this may affect your ability to receive IPL.  Finally there are some medical conditions that exclude you from having IPL.  Melasma is a stubborn form of pigmentation, sometimes made worse during pregnancy or with use of hormones.  People with Melasma should avoid IPL as it may worsen the condition.
